My Grandfather - by William Nolan
The entire world is holding its breath.
In the hospital, the very air seems to be full of death.
The last time I saw him; he was weak and frail.
His face was extremely pale.
It was devoid of any hue.
The old strength was gone, that was true.
In life this man helped others with all of his heart.
It seemed that he and I would never part.
Happily this man lived to be his best
His name was William Edwin West
38 years in the military for the United States
He had no regrets of his life, spun by the Fates
If I could live the life he lived I know I would feel at peace.
He gave God and mankind the kind of love that will never cease
Even as the Honor Guard’s shots stop
And my emotions are brimming to the top
I promise I will remember him forever.
